Please join us in welcoming our very own Richard Gardner, paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children who will address us on “Orthopaedic surgery in Africa- collaboration, capacity building and research.”  In working with CURE International Children’s Hospital, he established the first paediatric Orthopaedic fellowship program in Ethiopia and supported the development of the national Orthopaedic residency program. In 2020, Dr. Gardner moved to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to start the first paediatric Orthopaedic hospital in the country. As Chief Medical Officer for CURE, he oversaw the medical work for a further 5 other hospitals in Africa and one in the Philippines. The past 10 years taught Dr. Gardner about the great privilege of caring for vulnerable and disadvantaged children, the joy of working alongside local surgeons on national challenges and how to leverage local and international support to build capacity through education, advocacy, research, and intentional relationships. This year we welcome Dr. Prism Schneider, Orthopaedic trauma Surgeon and Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine.  The title of her talk “Trauma-induced Coagulopathy: Informing Individualized Thromboprophylaxis”, will give an insight into her research interests involving conducting clinical trials to define surgical indications following injury and evaluating optimal surgical techniques to help improve patient outcomes. Her trauma-induced coagulopathy research program studies a precision medicine approach to venous thromboembolism prevention. She also has a particular interest in identifying and assisting patients who are injured due to violence in the home.  We look forward to her visit at our Research day. Resident attendance is mandatory.

The Biennial Foot and Ankle Symposium is Canada’s largest surgical Foot & Ankle meeting. Not only does it provide a centralized forum for practising orthopaedic surgeons to stay current, but it also allows for an opportunity to meet face-to-face. Thursday Skills Lab

A national panel of Canadian experts from coast to coast will offer an accredited surgical hands-on teaching lab at the Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Our surgical lab meeting will focus on Medial, lateral and supramalleolar osteotomies, Minimally invasive calcaneal osteotomy, Total Talus Replacement, Total Ankle Replacement and Circumferential External Fixators. This will be a fully accredited hands-on surgical lab with one-on-one teaching by expert faculty.

This symposium has incorporated a minimum of 25% interactive Q&A period in every speaker presentation. To further increase opportunities for engagement, the conference committee provides online tools that allow for the submission of questions and participant comments.

Additional registration is required for this surgical lab. Enrollment is limited.

Goals

This symposium aims to enhance academic and clinical expertise in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery, covering clinical care, education, rehabilitation, research, and prevention. Drawing insights from senior faculty and community-based faculty perspectives, the aim is to facilitate the exchange of recent research findings and clinical applications among orthopedic surgeons specializing in foot and ankle surgery. The program will create a collaborative learning environment, including symposiums, skills lab sessions, case presentations, and audience participation. Through a combination of didactic instruction and hands-on cadaveric skills labs, participants will engage in a diverse range of streams, fostering collaborative learning in a team setting. The program’s primary focus is on assessing and treating foot disorders.

Objectives

After active engagement in this program, participants will be better able to

• Demonstrate the ability to identify biologics’ applications in bone and soft tissue healing by the end of the program.
• Enhance surgical proficiency and refine techniques for performing minimally invasive calcaneal osteotomy surgery and addressing trauma.
• Gain increased familiarity with the topographic anatomy of the foot and ankle through active participation in the program.
• Elevate the ability to enhance outcomes in cases involving Total Ankle Replacement (including Total Talus Replacement) and Circumferential External Fixators.
• Implement improved small-quality initiatives to expand the clinical approach and enhance patient care competence.

COSMEC was an overwhelming success – there were over 480 registered attendees in total, and 130 medical students who received a certificate of successful completion. A total of 23 faculty members helped to carry out six live, virtual teaching sessions, an Orthopaedic Skills Day, and a medical student information night. Participants primarily consisted of Canadian medical students; additionally there were students from over 17 countries and 81 institutions represented amongst all attendees.

The COSMEC Orthopaedic Skills Day was held on April 26, 2022 and hosted 40 medical students from the University of Toronto. Participants had the opportunity to engage with and learn key orthopaedic skills, including casting, suturing, knee arthroscopy and fracture fixation on sawbones. Dr. Reena Pattani

Dr. Reena Pattani will speak on Leaner Mistreatment in Medicine. Dr. Pattani is a staff physician and clinician educator in the Division of General Internal Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She currently serves as the Director of Learner Experience in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Charlie Guiang

Dr. Charlie Guiang will present on Supporting Learner Wellness and Resources. Dr. Guiang is the Interim Director of Postgraduate Learner Affairs, within the Office of Learner Affairs (OLA). He is an Assistant Professor in the Dept of Family and Community Medicine and a Family Physician at St. Michael’s-Unity Health Toronto with clinical expertise in HIV Primary Care. A previous Site Residency Program Director, he is the recipient of multiple postgraduate teaching and mentorship awards including the Sarita Verma Award for Advocacy and Mentorship. He is honoured to provide support to PG Learners and Programs and looks forward to helping learners achieve success.

Dr. Roxanne Kirsch

Dr. Roxanne Kirsch will talk about Allieship in Support of Wellness. Dr. Kirsch is co-appointed to the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Division of Cardiac Critical Care, and the Department of Bioethics. Recently she was appointed Interim Chief for the Division of Cardiac Critical Care. In addition, she is Associate Chief of the Department of Perioperative Services for Equity, Diversity, Inclusiveness, Wellness and Faculty Development. Her academic work focuses on the ethical and social challenges of stopping advanced technologic therapies, end of life care, introduction of innovative therapies, and resource allocation and prioritization.

This lecture has been made possible by a generous gift from the Hunter family to the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in memory of Dr. Hunter, a long-time member of our faculty at Sunnybrook Hospital. Dr. Hunter was known as an outstanding clinician and teacher and served as a mentor to many of our current faculty members in the Division.

This year the lecture will be given by Dr. Lawrence Malisano from Brisbane, Australia. He will present a talk titled “Experience – The hidden, unappreciated values”.

Dr. Lawrence Malisano

Dr. Lawrence Malisano is a Queensland, Australian born and educated orthopaedic surgeon. For the past 25 years he has been involved with the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and the Australian Medical Association (AMA). His roles have included foundation membership of and past honorary secretary of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia; State and Federal Committee membership of the AOA, RACS and AMA; RACS Court of Examiners, Orthopaedic Examiner; Past Vice President and President of the AOA as well as several roles within RACS, presently in office as Vice President.

His major interests include a sustainable and equitable future provision of health care for our community, physician well-being as a facilitator to providing world class health care, the promotion of Diversity and Inclusion and improving governance and transparency within RACS and AOA to promote relationship building within AOA and RACS and healthcare providers.

His company director roles stimulated an interest in structure, governance and becoming a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD).

Residents took their days off to catch up on life outside of orthopedics – whether it was seeing family and friends, arranging personal appointments, catching up on sleep, exercising, working on research/fellowship planning, playing hockey, golfing, or putting new fuel lines in their vintage scooter named “Ruby”. It was great to have PGY years spend time together in groups, which has been especially limited in recent years given the pandemic. Residents were able to enjoy a meal with 2-3 of their staff of choice, which was the biggest highlight of the day for most. To bring the resident body together as a whole, a WhatsApp group was created where residents could share photos from their wellness days.

At the end of the week, each resident received a custom U of T Ortho water bottle with hopes of increasing our water intake as a group going forward. The week ended with a potluck at Coronation Park where residents across all PGY years stopped in with their families for good food, drinks, and outdoor games. We are looking forward to celebrating this annually, aiming to keep wellness at the forefront of our residency program.

We had a record turnout last year with 18 groups and 72 players making it our biggest tournament to date. We’re hoping to keep this great tradition going and there will be prizes and mini competitions to keep things interesting throughout the day.

Dr. Rina Jain	Dr. Rina Jain, MD ’92, PGME ’99 Dr. Jain is based in San Diego, California. From 2010-2012, she served as Chief of Staff at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. She currently has a general orthopaedic and arthroplasty practice with Synergy Orthopedic Specialists.
Dr. Kurt Weiss	Dr. Kurt Weiss, PGME ’10 Dr. Weiss is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology, where he also directs the department’s Cancer Stem Cell Laboratory.
Dr. Andrea Chan	Dr. Andrea Chan, BSc ’05, MD ’12, PGME ’17 Dr. Chan’s work focuses on shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand trauma, arthroplasty and arthroscopy, as well as peripheral nerve injury. She joined the Hand Program at Toronto Western Hospital (University Health Network) in 2019.
Dr. Jason Shrouder-Henry	Dr. Jason Shrouder-Henry, PGME ’18 Dr. Shrouder-Henry is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity, currently practicing in Illinois. He also holds an MBA with a specialization in healthcare management and strategy.
Dr. Sarah Ward	Dr. Sarah Ward, HBsc ’96, MD ’08, PGME ’13, PGME (CF) ’15, MSc ‘18 Dr. Ward is an arthroplasty surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital, and an Assistant Professor at U of T with academic appointments in the Department of Surgery and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.

Dr. Kfuri earned his medical degree, followed by a PhD in Biomechanics and Bioengineering from the University of São Paulo in Brazil. He went on to become an Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo – Ribeirao Preto Medical School, and the President of the Brazilian Orthopaedic Trauma Society in 2011. His current practice is at the University of Missouri, Columbia School of Medicine.

Dr. Kfuri’s research and clinical interests are in the surgery of the knee and orthopaedic trauma surgery, with a special focus on tibial plateau fractures and comprehensive knee surgery. His talk is entitled “The Multiple Facets of the Knee: Worthy to Preserve”. This promises to be a very interesting and informative talk, and we hope that you can all join us to hear Dr. Kfuri speak on this topic.

About

The Oxford & Toronto Symposium in Musculoskeletal Sciences will take place on Monday 22nd March 2021. It will be a web-based symposium for binational student presentations on the topic of Musculoskeletal Sciences.

Mission for the Symposium

Bring together young clinician and basic scientist investigators with interests in orthopaedics and rheumatology to foster interdisciplinary working within the MSK sciences

Integrate studies of disease mechanism, therapeutic discovery and implementation of treatment strategies as a cohesive approach in the MSK sciences

Educationally, the purpose of the symposium is to act as a vehicle to enhance and broaden their understanding of the taught course content

Connecting students with University Toronto and Oxford University Faculty, providing a platform to advance future career opportunities / choices

The Presentations

The aim is to have a number of joint groups of students/trainees who work on a ‘project’ together and present their deliberations at a final web based plenary session between the two universities

There will be a number of pre-defined topics, each with a combined clinical science research themes that students from both institutions will sign up for. Themes will be allocated based on the student preferences.

Each group will then have a minimum of 2-3 scheduled web calls plus time for pre-reading where they would have to emerge with a consensus on the problem area, the objectives for a research project and how the research could be conducted. A presentation guide will be circulated.

All groups to present on Monday 22nd March 2021.

Members of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery alumni community are invited to join esteemed Division members Dr. Allan Gross, Dr. Joseph Schatzker, Dr. Marvin Tile and Dr. James Waddell as they reflect on the Division’s tremendous history and legacy of great surgeons, researchers, educators and innovators. Panelists will also share their perspectives on the future of our Division, and discuss their thoughts on promising innovations that will impact clinical care and surgical education.

Attendees will be able to engage in a Q&A session with the speakers following their remarks.

Dr. Allan Gross MD ’62, PGME ’71, O.Ont.
Dr. Gross is the former orthopaedic surgeon to the Toronto Blue Jays (during which he was fortunate to be part of the 1992 and 1993 World Series teams). He is the former Surgeon-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital and Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at U of T, where he currently serves as Professor of Surgery. Dr. Gross led the teams who performed Canada’s first fresh tissue knee joint transplant.

Dr. Joseph Schatzker CM, MD ’60, BSc ’62, FRCSC
Dr. Schatzker is the Director of the Mueller Institute based at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He was instrumental in the development of a revolutionary technique for treating bone fractures (the AO Method), and played a crucial role in bringing this technique to North America and other parts of the world. In 1974, he invented his classification of tibial plateau fractures which has become a world standard. He has authored many publications in journals and textbook chapters, and has coauthored several text books, including the best known and standard reference for years, coauthored with Dr. Marvin Tile, The Rationale of Operative Fracture Care. He is also a world famous educator and lecturer.

Dr. Marvin Tile CM, MD ’57, BSc ’63, FRCSC
Dr. Tile is a world authority on orthopaedic trauma, and in particular the treatment of pelvic fractures. His research on the biomechanics and treatment of fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum has been widely acknowledged as groundbreaking. Dr. Tile is a co-founder of the Tory Trauma Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Canada’s first and largest trauma centre. He also is the founding President of the Ontario Orthopedic Association and former Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at Sunnybrook. He is a past-president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association as well as a past-president of the AO Foundation of Switzerland.

Dr. James P. Waddell CM, MD, FRCSC, PGME ’72
Dr. Waddell is a renowned educator and contributor to surgical education. He is the former Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of the Trauma Program at St. Michael’s Hospital and Chair, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Toronto. He currently serves as Secretary-General of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) and Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Surgery for the Province of Ontario. Dr. Waddell is a long-standing advocate for musculoskeletal care in Canada and influential leader in the orthopaedic medical community.
