The segment highlighted how the initiative is opening doors for high school students—particularly those from underrepresented communities—by offering early, hands-on exposure to orthopaedic surgery.

Students rotated through four practical stations including:

• Casting for fractures
• Surgical fixation using plates and screws (sawbones)
• Suturing
• Arthroscopic surgery

Leadership and Mentorship in Action

Residents played a central role in guiding students through each station, offering not only instruction but also perspective on training pathways and career development during an hour long “lunch and learn” session.

I am saddened to inform you of the passing of a giant in the Toronto Orthopaedic Community, Dr. Ian Harrington. Dr. Harrington spent his entire career at Michael Garron Hospital (Formerly Toronto East General) and served as Division Head of Orthopaedics and Surgeon-in-Chief for many years. He was a true gentleman, a talented surgeon, a respected teacher and mentor, and one of the kindest individuals that you would ever meet. He was a deserving inductee to the Toronto Orthopaedic Hall of Fame in 2019.

Ian was a very special man, and one to whom I owe a great deal.
Lucia and I offer our heartfelt condolences to the Harrington family on the loss of someone who meant so much to us and to so many others.

I first met Ian in the Fracture Clinic at TEGH on July 1, 1991—my first day as a senior resident, following a demanding six months on the Orthopaedic Service at Sunnybrook. From that very first day, Ian was kind, generous with his time, and genuinely welcoming. That kindness never wavered throughout my six-month rotation. I enjoyed my time at TEGH so much that I returned the following year as a Fellow, largely because of the environment Ian helped create.

Ian, along with Dr. Barrington, played a pivotal role in hiring me as a Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon in July 1992. Nearly 34 years later, I remain deeply proud to have spent my career at what is now MGH—a path that would not have been possible without Ian’s belief in me and his steady guidance.

Ian was a patient teacher, a gifted surgeon, a dedicated researcher, a tireless administrator, a trusted mentor, and, to me, a friend.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Dr. Paul Wong and I nominated Ian to the University of Toronto Orthopaedic Hall of Fame. His acceptance, and the fact that he remains the only inductee from TEGH to date, is a testament to the esteem in which he was held by his peers and the lasting impact of his work.

It was truly an honour to have known Ian both professionally and personally. I will always treasure the time we spent together—whether in the operating room or in his office at Wynford Drive or during countless evening phone calls to his home early in my career when I sought his advice or in his later years when he joined me Tuesday mornings in the Fracture Clinic.

His wisdom, wit, generosity, and quiet support shaped my career and will remain with me always.

He has left an indelible mark on the careers of many orthopaedic surgeons in the city, the country, and around the world. He was and always will be a titan in our specialty, and his impact will continue to resonate for years to come. Dr. Seper Ekhtiari is a fellowship-trained academic hip and knee arthroplasty surgeon. Originally born in Iran, Dr. Ekhtiari grew up in Toronto, where he completed a Bachelor of Kinesiology at the University of Toronto, followed by medical school and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at McMaster University. He also completed a Master’s of Science in Health Research Methodology under the supervision of Dr. Mohit Bhandari at McMaster University. After residency, Dr. Ekhtiari completed the prestigious Hip Society M.E. Müller Fellowship at the ENDO Klinik in Hamburg, Germany and University of Cambridge in the UK. This was followed by a Complex Arthroplasty Fellowship at Mount Sinai in Toronto. Dr. Ekhtiari was practicing as a Hip and a Knee Arthroplasty Surgeon at Hamilton Health Sciences, and was appointed as an Assistant Professor at McMaster prior to joining the Sinai Arthroplasty group.

His clinical practice includes total hip and knee replacements, partial knee replacements, and robotic-assisted surgery. Dr. Ekhtiari has over 90 peer-reviewed publications to date, and has obtained over $250,000 in research grant funding for randomized clinical trials and large observational studies. His research has been published in top journals including JAMA, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and Lancet Oncology. He is passionate about improving outcomes for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery, including in the care of patients with infected joint replacements. Outside the hospital, he and his wife Rosemary enjoy travelling, reading, cooking, spending time with their families, and staying active, including running, cycling, and playing tennis. He is cautiously optimistic that the Toronto Maple Leafs will win a Stanley Cup in his lifetime, and is excited to be returning to Toronto to help cheer them on.

Seper joins the busy arthroplasty group at Mount Sinai and his practice will focus on primary and revision hip and knee replacements.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Dr. Albert Yee, who has worked tirelessly in this role for the past 11 years. Albert’s efforts have led to our current status as one of the most academically productive Divisions in North America.

Marvin Tile was born in Toronto where he attended Harbord Collegiate and the University of Toronto, graduating with B.Sc. (Medicine) and M.D. degrees in 1957. In 1963, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.  In 1965, as a Detweiler Traveling Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, he visited major orthopaedic centres in England and Europe. Returning to Canada, he joined the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, working with his mentor Dr. George Pennal.  He was appointed to staff at Sunnybrook Hospital in 1966, became Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1971, and from 1985 to 1996 he served as Surgeon-in-Chief.

Dr. Tile was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2009 for his contributions as a surgeon, educator and innovator.  He received numerous prestigious awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal.  His skill and care touched many lives which led to his philanthropic involvement to further academic surgery through AO and the establishment of the Endowed Marvin Tile Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at Sunnybrook.  His numerous professional leadership roles have included:

• Chair, Examining Board in Orthopaedic Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of Canada

• President, AO/ASIF Foundation, an international foundation dedicated to research and education in trauma and fractures, with headquarters in Switzerland

Dr. Tile was also deeply committed to his family and passionate in his reflections about the cultural past and present.  He shared his lived experiences publishing his autobiography ‘Severed Roots’ in 2010, which he wrote with contributions by his lifelong partner Esther following a powerful introspection into his ancestral homeland while traveling to Poland in 2006.  He promoted diversity and inclusion, combated antisemitism, racism, and violence. He broadly shared experiences at lecture discussions held by the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine and related topics were featured by Visiting Professors in their lectures delivered as part of our university’s Department of Surgery annual Tile Lecture in Trauma.

In recent years, Dr. Tile continued to mentor clinicians, scientists, and trainees through a Wyss Medical Foundation supported project focusing on enhancing surgical team performance in fracture care.  He continued to contribute towards continuing medical education writing also several discussion papers to support Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal.  He was an inaugural inductee into the Toronto Orthopaedic Hall of Fame in 2017. He was intensely committed to the University Division, and even during the last year was a regular attendee via zoom at University Wide Orthopaedic Rounds. Dr. Tile’s immense influence continues to be reflected by the number of faculty within University of Toronto, across Canada, and around the world that he trained. He was a titan in the orthopaedic community, and his loss will resonate throughout our specialty.

Dr. Tile is survived by his wife, Esther, and the couple’s four children: Gary, Stephen, Andrew and Debbie, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Details of Dr. Tile’s funeral will be shared via Benjamin’s Park Memorial Chapel as they are confirmed. Tribute donations can be directed to the Dr. Marvin Tile Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Our program is currently undergoing significant and exciting change and growth. Dr. Dvorak is unlikely to return to clinical practice and Dr. Fisher is transitioning to retirement over the coming year. Giant shoes to fill for both of them. We have hired one surgeon already with three additional surgeons joining the group over the coming year.

Dr. Charlotte Dandurand is a UBC neurosurgery residency and VGH Spine fellowship graduate. Dr. Dvorak has mentored her in the AO Knowledge Forum Trauma while she is focusing her clinical practice on minimally invasive surgery, endoscopy, and robotics.

Later this year we will welcome Dr. Brad Jacobs, a mid-career deformity surgeon from Calgary and a leading AO Educator.

We have also hired two new graduates: Dr. William Chu Kwan (a Toronto Ortho graduate and prior fellow of ours who will also complete an MIS / endoscopy fellowship with Dr. Mike Wang in Miami) and Dr. Newton Cho (a surgeon scientist that will be joining Dr. Kwon at ICORD). We now have dedicated deformity, oncology, MIS and neurosurgical / intradural teams, as well as two different navigation systems, use three different instrument vendors, and have just acquired the Mazor Robot and an Endoscopy suite. We believe these updates have hugely enriched what we thought was already an excellent fellowship program, and we hope this would encourage you to refer potential fellows.

Updates to the Spine Fellowship

In the past, ward and emergency department responsibilities were identified as unreasonable burdens on fellows. We have taken great steps to reduce this non-surgical workload for fellows. The ward work is now the responsibility of intensivists, physiatrists, a nurse practitioner and three associate physicians, so our fellows are now essentially free of that burden. We have also established an Advanced Practice Physiotherapy program, triaging the majority of the spine referrals to the clinic.

We are now operating in large state of the art OR suites, vastly different from those days in OR21 and OR9! The entire program has been significantly transformed – and we believe this makes for one of the best fellowships in the world.

Finally, Canada is about to approve a first-in-the-world diploma program in spine surgery through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This will be an official diploma program that can follow either orthopedic or neurosurgical residency training. The VGH/UBC fellowship will be the first program to offer this diploma as part of our fellowship, beginning in 2026-27.

The successful candidate will have an active staff appointment with clinical activities in the Division of Orthopaedics, Department of Surgery, at Mount Sinai Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality of clinical care to hip and knee arthroplasty patients and participate fully in a co-operative and collegial way with other members of the Division of Orthopaedics. As part of a specialized clinical program, the successful candidate will conduct a practice of surgery with a special expertise in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, robotics, and trauma care. It is anticipated that clinical duties will involve approximately 40% of their time. During the provision of clinical responsibilities, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will be actively involved in supervising students, residents and other clinical trainees. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will be engaged in clinical work that is in direct support of University academic work. The successful candidate’s research portfolio will be expected to involve approximately 40% of their time, with 20% of their time allotted to administrative and educational activities.

The successful candidate must be a fellowship-trained knee and hip arthroplasty surgeon and must be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent, with completion of a postgraduate degree program (i.e. MSc, MPH, PhD, MBA), eligible to hold licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and eligible for appointment in the Surgery and Oncology Program at Sinai Health and Mount Sinai Hospital. The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate must be comfortable managing primary and complex revision knee and hip arthroplasty cases as well as provide management of fracture and trauma patients. Prioritization will be given to those with experience and interest in robotic-assisted joint replacement, complex revision knee replacement, and contemporary approaches to hip replacement. The successful candidate will have an interest in academic practice, a vision for research that aligns with the Division’s key priorities, and be eligible for appointment as a Surgeon-Investigator or Surgeon-Scientist. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required. The successful candidate should possess strong leadership skills, professionalism and an ability to work in a team.

Sinai Health System (SHS) is a University of Toronto, fully affiliated academic hospital comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, Lunenfeld-Tannenbaum Research Institute and Circle of Care, which combines acute care, complex and rehabilitative care, primary care and other community based services to create an innovative and integrated continuum of care with the goal to achieve the best outcomes and experiences and outcomes for our patients. In 2020, Dr. Gardner moved to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to start the first paediatric Orthopaedic hospital in the country. As Chief Medical Officer for CURE, he oversaw the medical work for a further 5 other hospitals in Africa and one in the Philippines. The past 10 years taught Dr. Gardner about the great privilege of caring for vulnerable and disadvantaged children, the joy of working alongside local surgeons on national challenges and how to leverage local and international support to build capacity through education, advocacy, research, and intentional relationships. The Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is pleased to announce a September 2024 intake for the Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC) and Graduate Certificate in Global Surgical Care (GCGSC) programs.

Our graduate programs are innovative, online programs focused on the global burden of unmet surgical care. Learners will build on their health-care related disciplines to gain the fundamental knowledge, critical thinking tools and practical skills needed to lead the way to improved access to care by addressing the gap that exists between surgical need and the equitable provision of safe surgical care in low resource settings.

• The Graduate Certificate in Global Surgical Care (GCGSC) is a 12-credit certificate program consisting of 4 courses designed to meet the growing need for professional development in global surgical care.
• The Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC) is an online two-year, 30-credit specialized program consisting of 8 courses designed to prepare surgical care professionals from many disciplines to address surgical challenges and contribute to solutions in low-resource settings globally. The MGSC includes the option to complete a specialized stream in Canadian Low Resource Settings, focusing on the unique issues affecting surgical care in rural and remote low resource settings in Canada.

By expanding students’ knowledge of conditions, and global circumstances, that shape surgical care globally, graduates will become leaders in this emerging academic discipline and equipped to play an integral part in provision of global surgical care in low resource settings including rural, remote and Indigenous communities in Canada and around the world.  Our programs build capacity within the field of surgery for provision of care in low-resource settings.

Upon completion, students will be able to:

• Analyze global barriers to surgical care in underserved populations to foster solutions.

This year we welcome Dr. Prism Schneider, Orthopaedic trauma Surgeon and Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine.  The title of her talk “Trauma-induced Coagulopathy: Informing Individualized Thromboprophylaxis”, will give an insight into her research interests involving conducting clinical trials to define surgical indications following injury and evaluating optimal surgical techniques to help improve patient outcomes. Her trauma-induced coagulopathy research program studies a precision medicine approach to venous thromboembolism prevention. She also has a particular interest in identifying and assisting patients who are injured due to violence in the home.  We look forward to her visit at our Research day. Resident attendance is mandatory.

Caroline Cristofaro and I had our first publication in the CMAJ today on parental and childbearing surgeon support policies. This article is in conjunction with our upcoming University Wide Rounds focus on support for childbearing trainees.

Positive feedback on the article has been received from surgeons across Canada. Below is the link for our faculty and learners to peruse and we welcome any feedback you would like to share.

This fund will support investigation in any area of orthopaedic surgery education – undergraduate, postgraduate (resident), fellowship, or continuing education. Priority will be given to projects investigating novel and innovative education techniques that have the potential for immediate impact on educational paradigms. Consideration will be given to funding as many projects as are deemed meritorious by the funding panel. Principal investigators must be faculty members in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Toronto. Collaborative projects involving multiple teaching hospitals are strongly encouraged.

Dr. Halai is a Surgeon-Investigator and Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Unity Health – St. Michael’s Hospital. He has developed an impressive research program assessing outcomes of foot and ankle reconstruction, more specifically minimally invasive techniques to treat ankle fractures. Dr. Halai also serves as the Research Chair of the Canadian Orthpaedic Foot and Ankle Society (COFAS). He has been recognized as an outstanding teacher and clinician. The review committee was also extremely impressed with Dr. Halai’s efforts in Global Surgery and Disaster Management.

Dr. Halai is well on his way toward academic promotion. We are extremely fortunate, as a Division, to have recruited Dr. Halai to Toronto and we look forward to his ongoing achievements in academic foot and ankle surgery.

Canada’s Largest Surgical Foot and Ankle Meeting

The University of Toronto’s Biennial Foot & Ankle Symposium’s continued success has been due to excellent speakers, dedicated participants, and enthusiastic exhibitors. With this in mind, we welcome you to join us at the 15th Biennial Canadian Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Symposium on April 5-6, 2024 at the InterContinental Toronto Centre, Canada.

The Biennial Foot and Ankle Symposium is Canada’s largest surgical Foot & Ankle meeting. Not only does it provide a centralized forum for practising orthopaedic surgeons to stay current, but it also allows for an opportunity to meet face-to-face. Biennial Foot & Ankle Symposium is the hub for the Canadian orthopaedic community.

Thursday Skills Lab

A national panel of Canadian experts from coast to coast will offer an accredited surgical hands-on teaching lab at the Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Our surgical lab meeting will focus on Medial, lateral and supramalleolar osteotomies, Minimally invasive calcaneal osteotomy, Total Talus Replacement, Total Ankle Replacement and Circumferential External Fixators. This will be a fully accredited hands-on surgical lab with one-on-one teaching by expert faculty.

This symposium has incorporated a minimum of 25% interactive Q&A period in every speaker presentation. To further increase opportunities for engagement, the conference committee provides online tools that allow for the submission of questions and participant comments.

Additional registration is required for this surgical lab. Enrollment is limited.

Goals

This symposium aims to enhance academic and clinical expertise in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery, covering clinical care, education, rehabilitation, research, and prevention. Drawing insights from senior faculty and community-based faculty perspectives, the aim is to facilitate the exchange of recent research findings and clinical applications among orthopedic surgeons specializing in foot and ankle surgery. The program will create a collaborative learning environment, including symposiums, skills lab sessions, case presentations, and audience participation. Through a combination of didactic instruction and hands-on cadaveric skills labs, participants will engage in a diverse range of streams, fostering collaborative learning in a team setting. The program’s primary focus is on assessing and treating foot disorders.

Objectives

After active engagement in this program, participants will be better able to

• Demonstrate the ability to identify biologics’ applications in bone and soft tissue healing by the end of the program.
• Enhance surgical proficiency and refine techniques for performing minimally invasive calcaneal osteotomy surgery and addressing trauma.
• Gain increased familiarity with the topographic anatomy of the foot and ankle through active participation in the program.
• Elevate the ability to enhance outcomes in cases involving Total Ankle Replacement (including Total Talus Replacement) and Circumferential External Fixators.
• Implement improved small-quality initiatives to expand the clinical approach and enhance patient care competence.

We are seeking participants to engage in Video-based Surgical Training, to help us better understand how medical trainees/professionals use online video-based learning materials to learn about orthopedic surgery and related topics. We plan to generate best practices in online instruction and video-based learning, with the goal of informing future design of engaging online medical education platforms.

By immersing in our professionally produced video content, you will learn from best-in-class animations, and visualizations that provide real-world examples of various topics in orthopedic surgery.

If you volunteer to participate in this study, it will involve:

1. Completing survey questionnaires. 
2. Registering for a user account via the learning portal to interact with online learningcontent as you normally would.

Your interactions will be recorded, using web analytic tools, to help us understand your learning experience with the platform.

Daniel is a Surgeon-Investigator and arthroplasty surgeon and has demonstrated incredible academic productivity in his first 3 years of practice. He has gained widespread national and international recognition for several seminal publications in the arthroplasty domain. Daniel is widely regarded as an outstanding teacher and clinician and is on a clear track towards academic promotion. Our University Division is incredibly proud of Daniel’s accomplishments.

We will be hosting an evening event for Women Of Orthopaedics (WOO) on March 13th, 2024 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at Women’s College Hospital in the Pink Cube. 

We encourage all those who identify as women who are interested in or currently involved with Orthopaedic Surgery to attend. The goal will be to generate discussion about challenges, triumphs, wisdom, and general thoughts on the experiences of women in Orthopaedics. 

The event will involve two semi-structured panel discussions at the staff and fellow/resident levels, as well as some unstructured time to brainstorm and socialize. Refreshments will be provided. 

This event is aimed at providing a space for discussion about the experiences of women in Orthopaedics, but all are welcome to join.

Dr. Matthies joins the Toronto Western Hospital Orthopaedic Division as an Assistant Professor. Prior to this, she has worked for the past 3 and a half years as a staff surgeon at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder with particular interest in patellar instability and knee ligament reconstruction, including pediatric and adolescent patients. Her research interests include surgical quality improvement & OR sustainability, qualitative research, and diversity in orthopedics.

Dr. Matthies completed her residency from the University of Toronto in 2018 and subsequently completed two subspeciality fellowships in sports medicine & arthroscopy (University of Toronto Orthopaedic Sports Medicine) and lower limb reconstruction & trauma (St. Michaels Hospital). She is the current head orthopaedic surgeon for the National Ballet of Canada.

Dr. Weinerman is a staff General Internist. She is the Medical Director, Quality and Patient Safety and Chief Patient Experience Officer at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Her lecture titled “Safe Team, Safe Patients,” highlights her research and quality improvement efforts which focus on resource stewardship, patient safety and patient experience.
