Teaching

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery has faculty appointed at all of the University Teaching Hospitals including:
  • The Hospital for Sick Children
  • Michael Garron Hospital (formerly Toronto East General)
  • Mount Sinai Hospital
  • St. Michael’s Hospital
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
  • Toronto Western Hospital (UHN)
  • Women’s College Hospital

With nearly 80 faculty, the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is one of the largest academic orthopaedic surgery centres in North America.

Each academic year we accept 11 new residents (7 CMG, 2 IMG and 2 VISA) for a total of 50-53 residents in training across the 5-year program. In addition, orthopaedic surgeons from around the world come to Toronto for additional clinical and research training in orthopaedic surgery. We average 55 to 65 Clinical and Research Fellows in the division per academic year.

Our training program is the largest post-graduate training program in Canada and is considered the world leader in orthopaedic surgery education. Our division has pioneered the Competency-Based model of residency training taking part in the MOHLTC sponsored pilot CBC project that started in 2009. The division also runs several CME-accredited programs.
