Dr. Bavan is a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon at The Hospital for Sick Children and a member of the University of Toronto orthopaedic community. The award recognizes his research into developmental dysplasia of the hip in infants, one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions affecting children during infancy.

The Canadian Orthopaedic Research Legacy program was established in 2006 to strengthen Canada’s international leadership in orthopaedic research. Through research funding, the program supports the development of new techniques, treatments and approaches to care that can improve outcomes for orthopaedic patients in Canada and around the world.

The Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation recognized Dr. Bavan’s work as being of world-class significance and closely aligned with the purpose of the award. Together with his research team, he is helping to advance the understanding and treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip, with the goal of improving mobility, reducing long-term complications and supporting a better quality of life for affected children.

Musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of disability in Canada and place a substantial burden on patients, families and the healthcare system. Research led by clinicians such as Dr. Bavan is essential to developing more effective methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

The Board of Directors and the Research Council Selection Committee of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation joined in congratulating Dr. Bavan and his team on receiving this important recognition.
