Our Stories: Developing and Promoting a Diverse Workforce

Members of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery alumni community are invited to join divisional members and fellow alumni Drs. Maryse Bouchard, Andrea Chan, Rina Jain, Jason Shrouder-Henry, Sarah Ward and Kurt Weiss as they share their perspectives on how to develop a diverse workforce.

Panelists will also share their views on what we can do collectively to promote equity, diversity and inclusion in our specialty and best serve diverse patient populations. Attendees will be able to engage in a Q&A session with the speakers following the discussion.

Dr. Maryse Bouchard

Dr. Maryse Bouchard, MSc ’11, PGME ’14

Dr. Bouchard is an Assistant Professor at U of T and a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at The Hospital for Sick Children. She is the also the divisional representative of the Department of Surgery’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force.


Dr. Rina Jain

Dr. Rina Jain, MD ’92, PGME ’99

Dr. Jain is based in San Diego, California. From 2010-2012, she served as Chief of Staff at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. She currently has a general orthopaedic and arthroplasty practice with Synergy Orthopedic Specialists.


Dr. Kurt Weiss

Dr. Kurt Weiss, PGME ’10

Dr. Weiss is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology, where he also directs the department’s Cancer Stem Cell Laboratory.


Dr. Andrea Chan

Dr. Andrea Chan, BSc ’05, MD ’12, PGME ’17

Dr. Chan’s work focuses on shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand trauma, arthroplasty and arthroscopy, as well as peripheral nerve injury. She joined the Hand Program at Toronto Western Hospital (University Health Network) in 2019.


Dr. Jason Shrouder-Henry

Dr. Jason Shrouder-Henry, PGME ’18

Dr. Shrouder-Henry is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity, currently practicing in Illinois. He also holds an MBA with a specialization in healthcare management and strategy.


Dr. Sarah Ward

Dr. Sarah Ward, HBsc ’96, MD ’08, PGME ’13, PGME (CF) ’15, MSc ‘18

Dr. Ward is an arthroplasty surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital, and an Assistant Professor at U of T with academic appointments in the Department of Surgery and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.
