Jesse Wolfstadt Appointed Division Head of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mount Sinai Hospital
Dr. Jesse Wolfstadt
Dear Colleagues,
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jesse Wolfstadt on his appointment as Orthopaedic Surgery Division Head at Mount Sinai Hospital.
After receiving his MD from the University of Toronto in 2011, Dr. Wolfstadt completed residency training at U of T where he received the James P. Waddell Orthopaedic Resident Award for clinical and academic excellence and the most outstanding graduate award. He completed the complex adult lower extremity reconstruction fellowship at Mount Sinai, as well as a master’s degree in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation (IHPME). After additional fellowship training in traumatology and arthroplasty at St. Michael’s Hospital and traumatology at Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand, he returned to Mount Sinai Hospital to perform complex knee arthroplasty surgery.
With a clinical focus on complex primary and revision total knee replacement, as well as trauma surgery and outpatient total joint replacement, Dr. Wolfstadt’s research interest focuses on improving the efficiency and quality of care for joint replacement and trauma patients through interprofessional and patient-centred co-design. During his time at Sinai Health, he has collaborated on many projects aligned with our vision and Quality Improvement Plan. This includes improving the safe, timely and patient-centred care of our ambulatory fracture patients, the development of a regional anesthesia program and dedicated block room, and rapidly pivoting to an outpatient total joint arthroplasty program during the COVID-19 pandemic. The publication of many of these local quality improvement projects in leading national and international journals is evidence of his expanding academic profile, with over 60 publications since his academic appointment in 2018. Dr. Wolfstadt has also been awarded several peer-reviewed grants as a PI or co-investigator, totaling over $1 million in funding.
He is the recipient of several teaching awards at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including the Surgical Skills Centre DH Gales Outstanding Educator Award, Sinai Health’s Distinguished Educator Award, MD Program Teaching Award for Excellence, Sinai Health’s Excellence in Quality and Safety Award (Team Category), and the Orthopaedic Chair’s Teaching Award for contributions to orthopaedic education as voted by the residents. Dr. Wolfstadt is an alumnus of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Quality Scholars Fellowship Program through the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. In 2023, he completed the prestigious Insall Traveling Fellowship, a five-week tour across the leading knee replacement centres in North America.
Our University Division looks forward to working with Jesse in his new role.
Best regards,
