Welcome to Stan Hamstra

Dear Colleagues,
Please join me in welcoming (back) Dr. Stan Hamstra to our faculty at Sunnybrook Hospital Research Institute.

Dr. Stanley Hamstra

Stan is well known to many of us from his previous tenure in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Hamstra joins the University of Toronto from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in the USA. He also holds an adjunct appointment at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Stan’s primary research focus will be on correlating surgical performance and training to patient outcomes. While at the ACGME, Dr. Hamstra was responsible for research on the ACGME Milestones for resident physician progression and board eligibility. Dr. Hamstra works with various medical specialty societies, program director organizations, and specialty certification boards. His research addresses medical education broadly, including competency assessment for residency training programs, and developing administrative support for educational scholarship within academic health settings. Dr. Hamstra has also had faculty positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Toronto Department of Surgery. He continues to work closely with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada on developing policies regarding competency-based medical education for graduate medical education.

We look forward to working with Stan on many of our educational initiatives. Welcome Stan – so glad to have you back in Toronto!

Best regards,
